The Snake Plant, also known as Mother-in-Law's Tongue, is one of the most resilient houseplants you can grow. Its upright, sword-like leaves with striking yellow edges make it a stunning architectural plant. NASA's Clean Air Study found it to be one of the best plants for filtering indoor air pollutants including formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.
🌱Care Guide
Extremely drought-tolerant — water only when soil is completely dry. Avoid waterlogging as it causes root rot. Thrives in almost any light condition. Fertilize sparingly, once in spring and once in summer. Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust.
🧬Evolution & History
Sansevieria evolved in the arid regions of West Africa, developing thick, succulent leaves to store water during droughts. The plant uses CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis — opening its stomata at night to reduce water loss, making it one of the few plants that release oxygen at night. Recent phylogenetic studies reclassified it into the genus Dracaena.
